"Sound and Vision": Painted Responses to Music

ROAM Outreach 2

Abstract

This project was developed by four undergraduate students of Contemporary Visual Arts, a subject that is common to several degree courses at Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa.  We aim to gain an understanding of how different artistic expressions can be intertwined to produce a meaningful experience that will connect the audience to the artists. The audience will observe two young artists of Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa painting two artworks while being accompanied by two musicians of Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa for an hour. One of the musicians will play the guitar in the first half an hour and will then be replaced by the other musician, a singer using her voice only. An important aspect of the creative process is the space for improvisation and spontaneous development that will be provided, creating a site for art to cross boundaries. The artistic production will then be followed by a discussion and interview with the artists.  This approach will provide an insight into how musical performance can influence the creative process. Questioning the creators immediately after the art piece is finished is an interesting form of engagement that we do not have the opportunity to experience very often in traditional galleries and formal cultural spaces. By choosing young artists from universities, we aim to represent ourselves - as students, locals, and as the new generation.

- JOÃO GAMA, 23 YEARS OLD

Born in the village of Arrepiado in the district of Santarém, he came to Lisbon to study Sculpture in Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, where he is now taking his master’s degree. João usually works with wood. When he paints, he uses strong colours to depict landscapes and figures. To the artist, his art is important to capture instincts and the essence of life.

- MARIA TRISTÃO, 23 YEARS OLD

Maria is a young Portuguese artist from Mira de Aire now on the last year of her degree in Painting in Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa. Her work focuses on the representation of space with specific characteristics that allow her to create scenarios, or on the representation of images that overwhelm her with the need to paint and transform them into art.

- LUCAS CALHEIROS, 19 YEARS OLD

Lucas is from Carcavelos and is currently studying Estudos Gerais in Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa. As an artist, he plays the guitar, the bass, and sings. He is a member of Flor Girino, a band where he adapts existing themes but also writes original songs. Improvisation is re-occurring in his musical expression. Some of his inspirations are Alfredo Marceneiro, Allen Halloween, and Alice in Chains.

- MARTA AGOSTINI, 21 YEARS OLD

Marta is an Erasmus student in Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa.  She is from Trento, Italy, and is studying Anthropology. Marta chose Portugal because of its warm temperatures and culture. Besides Humanities, she is interested in music and singing. The artist expresses her individuality through musical experimentation with her voice, using vibration and instruments. Her inspiration comes from human relations, nature, and love.
